Bloodwork Services for Pets

A simple method used to diagnose and treat ailments in pets.

Blood tests can help veterinarians stop a disease in its early stages. Blood tests are highly effective in the detection of diseases or disease-causing factors such as parasites, viruses, and bacteria. At Holland Landing Animal Hospital, we emphasize education for our pet parents. If a veterinarian has recommended bloodwork for your pet, we will explain why the bloodwork is being conducted, what potential results could mean, and possible treatment options to help make the right decision for your pet.

What are some common blood tests for dogs and cats?

The two most common veterinary blood tests are CBC and serum chemistry panel. Complete blood count (CBC) measures the levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood. It also provides details about the size and shape of these cells. With the serum chemistry panel, we can assess the functioning of vital organs such as the liver and kidneys and measure electrolytes and secretion of enzymes in the body.

How often should my pet's blood be tested?

Blood tests are helpful in the early detection of various diseases. For adult pets, blood tests should be conducted once a year. For geriatric or senior pets, it can be done twice a year as they face more risks. Blood tests are also performed before surgeries, before administration of anesthesia, or to monitor ongoing treatment and disease progression.
